Aitana Bonmati: The Three-Time FIFA Best Women's Player of the Year! (2026)

Aitana Bonmatí Clinches FIFA Best Women’s Player Award for Third Consecutive Year

Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí has been crowned FIFA Best Women’s Player of the Year for the third straight time, while England’s Sarina Wiegman secures the Best Coach honor for a fifth occasion.

Bonmatí, 27, played a pivotal role as Spain finished as runners-up to England at Euro 2025, where she also claimed the Player of the Tournament award. Domestically, she helped Barcelona complete a treble in Liga F, contributing 12 goals and six assists, though her club finished as runners-up in the Champions League after losing to Arsenal in the final.

Her form earned her UEFA’s Player of the Season accolade, tallying nine goal involvements in 11 appearances, and a goal in Barcelona’s 4-1 second-leg semi-final win over Chelsea.

In reflecting on the FIFA prize, Bonmatí said: “I’m honored to receive this award. I wouldn’t have achieved it without the players, coaches, and fans, but I’ll enjoy the moment.” Earlier in September, she also claimed the women’s Ballon d’Or, becoming the first player to win it three times (2023, 2024, and 2025).

She previously won the FIFA Best award in 2023 following Spain’s World Cup triumph, and again in 2024 after Barcelona’s historic quadruple victory.

Other nominees for this year’s FIFA Best included Arsenal and Spain midfielder Mariona Caldentey and Barcelona forward Alexia Putellas.

In the men’s category, Paris Saint‑Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé took home the award.

Wiegman’s Fifth Coach of the Year

Sarina Wiegman was named the best women’s coach after leading England to a second consecutive European title, marking a record fifth time she has won the honor.

“It’s a true honor to receive this award again,” Wiegman commented. “Thank you to the FA for their ongoing support. This award belongs to the players and staff. We’ve shown strong belief and unity that powered our second Euro title.

As we head into 2026, let’s continue advancing the women’s game and create environments that help every player reach their full potential.”

England exited Euro 2025 amid some uncertainty, with tough results and retirements, but Wiegman steered the Lionesses to victory over Spain on penalties in the final in Switzerland.

She beat Chelsea’s Sonia Bompastor and Arsenal’s Renée Slegers for the award.

Hampton Tops Goalkeeper List

Hannah Hampton was named FIFA Best Women’s Goalkeeper after her role in England’s European title defense, also earning the Golden Glove with 13 clean sheets. The 25-year-old contributed to Chelsea’s domestic treble last season.

Hampton thanked Wiegman and Chelsea boss Emma Hayes for their belief in her, and praised the support from fans, saying it drives the team to win.

She also collected the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in September. Hampton started every England match at Euro 2025 and started all of Chelsea’s games in an undefeated Women’s Super League campaign.

Marta Award for Best Goal

Lizbeth Ovalle won the Marta Award for the best goal in women’s football for her scorpion kick against Guadalajara in Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil in March. Ovalle now plays for Orlando Pride in the U.S. National Women’s Soccer League.

Barcelona Dominate Best XI

Four members of England’s Euro 2025-winning squad earned spots in FIFA’s Best XI, while Barcelona largely filled the lineup.

Nominees from England included Leah Williamson and Alessia Russo, who both lifted the Champions League with Arsenal, alongside Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton and Lucy Bronze.

Best XI: Hannah Hampton (Chelsea), Lucy Bronze (Chelsea), Leah Williamson (Arsenal), Irene Paredes (Barcelona), Ona Batlle (Barcelona), Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona), Patricia Guijarro (Barcelona), Claudia Pina (Barcelona), Mariona Caldentey (Arsenal), Alessia Russo (Arsenal), Alexia Putellas (Barcelona).

This year’s ceremony highlighted Barcelona’s deep impact on women’s football and underscored England’s continued strength under Wiegman’s leadership, while showcasing standout contributions across clubs and continents.
