The Azzedine Alaïa Foundation's latest exhibition, 'Azzedine Alaïa and Christian Dior: Two Masters of Haute Couture', is a testament to the enduring influence of these fashion legends. The show, which runs until May 24, 2023, at La Galerie Dior in Paris, showcases the work of these two iconic designers, with a particular focus on their shared appreciation for the art of haute couture.
The exhibition is the second chapter in a series of collaborations between the foundation and Dior, following similar shows featuring the work of Cristóbal Balenciaga, Madame Grès, and Thierry Mugler. The collection, curated by Olivier Saillard, director of the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation, features nearly 70 pieces from both designers, all drawn from Alaïa's personal collection.
The show begins with a red dress designed by Alaïa for a private client in 1958, a virtual twin of a Dior design from the same year. The influence of Dior's work on Alaïa is unmistakable, with the two designers sharing a similar aesthetic and a deep understanding of the art of haute couture.
Both designers favored hourglass silhouettes, accentuated waists, sculpted shoulders, curved hips, and voluminous skirts. While Dior relied on corsets to achieve his iconic New Look, Alaïa preferred to cinch his creations with extra-wide leather belts. The exhibition also features undergarments, such as a petticoat and boned bustier, to showcase the structure underpinning the looks.
The show highlights the romantic side of Dior, with gowns bursting with patterns, embroidery, and vivid colors, echoed in the floral set design of the exhibition by Kris Ruhs. The Andalouse dress, inspired by Spanish design, is shown alongside a floor-length red tiered Alaïa dress from 2013, while an emerald velvet design from 1988 is associated with Dior's 1949 Petite Roue jacket.
