Sabah and Sarawak's Fight for Fair Representation: A Controversial Decision
The battle for parliamentary representation in Malaysia takes a new turn! Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced a significant move to add more parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak, but it's not the full victory these states have been seeking.
In a recent statement, Anwar revealed that the federal government will increase the number of seats for Sabah and Sarawak ahead of the highly anticipated General Election 16 (GE16). However, this increase falls short of the states' demand for one-third of the seats in the Dewan Rakyat, a request rooted in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
But here's where it gets controversial: Anwar acknowledges the need for further study on this matter due to differing interpretations of the MA63. The federal, Sabah, and Sarawak governments, along with their respective attorneys-general, are currently examining this complex issue.
Anwar assures that the government is committed to increasing the number of seats, but it won't be the one-third ratio demanded.
