DeWanna Bonner's 2012 Season: A Year of Growth and Adaptation (2026)

The Rise of DeWanna Bonner: A 2012 Success Story

DeWanna Bonner's journey with the Phoenix Mercury began in 2009, a pivotal year for the team. The Mercury claimed their second championship, led by the legendary Diana Taurasi, who was named Most Valuable Player for her outstanding regular season performances and later, Finals MVP during their postseason triumph. Bonner, too, had a stellar season, earning the Sixth Woman of the Year award alongside the championship. Her impact didn't wane; she repeated as Sixth Woman of the Year in 2010 and 2011, showcasing her versatility and importance to the team.

However, her role shifted in 2012. Bonner transitioned from a reserve to a starter, and this change brought out her full potential. She averaged a career-high 20.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.7 steals, with a standout 38-point game against the San Antonio Silver Stars. Despite the Mercury's loss, Bonner's performance was exceptional, demonstrating her ability to score and contribute in multiple facets of the game.

Charde Houston, another Mercury player, also shone with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Together, they led the team, but the Silver Stars emerged victorious by a single point.

The Mercury's season ended with a disappointing 7-27 record, missing the playoffs. Yet, Bonner's adaptation to a new role was a positive sign. She remained a starter for Phoenix until her departure, joining the Connecticut Sun in 2020 and becoming a key player. Over the years, Bonner accumulated accolades, including a move to the Indiana Fever before the 2025 season, though it didn't work out. She returned to the Mercury, solidifying her place in the team's history.

Bonner's 2012 season stands out as a testament to her adaptability and talent. Her ability to step into a new role and excel is a remarkable achievement, leaving a lasting impact on the Mercury's legacy.
