Hanwha's Global LNG Expansion: Securing Energy Future
Hanwha Group is strategically expanding its global presence in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, aiming to secure a reliable energy supply and strengthen its position in the energy market. With a comprehensive approach, Hanwha is building an integrated LNG value chain, covering production, transportation, and utilization, to meet the world's growing energy demands.
The LNG Value Chain: A Comprehensive Approach
Hanwha's strategy involves leveraging the expertise and technology of its diverse businesses to create a seamless LNG value chain. By fostering collaboration between its companies, Hanwha aims to achieve an end-to-end capability in the industry.
Expanding LNG Production: Offshore Engineering and Strategic Investments
In the front-end of the LNG value chain, Hanwha is making significant strides through advanced offshore engineering and strategic investments. In 2016, Hanwha Ocean pioneered the world's first fully integrated floating LNG (FLNG) platform, revolutionizing offshore gas production. This innovative facility combines extraction, liquefaction, storage, and loading on a single vessel, reducing costs and emissions while enabling the development of deep-water gas fields.
Additionally, Hanwha has deepened its involvement in large-scale LNG exports. As the largest shareholder of NextDecade, a U.S. LNG developer, Hanwha is contributing to the construction of the Rio Grande LNG terminal in Brownsville, Texas. This terminal, set to begin operations in 2027, will produce a substantial 27 million metric tons of low-carbon LNG annually, making it one of the world's largest export facilities.
Strengthening Transportation: Global Leadership in LNG Carriers
Hanwha's expertise in shipbuilding and technological innovation positions it as a global leader in LNG transportation. Hanwha Ocean, backed by Clarksons Research data, boasts the No. 1 global market share in LNG carrier construction. This year, the company achieved a significant milestone by delivering its 200th LNG carrier, a record that solidifies its position as the first shipbuilder to reach this milestone. These vessels are the backbone of international LNG trade, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable transportation between producers and consumers.
Furthermore, Hanwha's acquisition of Philly Shipyard in 2024 establishes a production base for LNG carriers in the U.S., the world's largest LNG exporter. This strategic move strengthens Hanwha's role in LNG transportation and reinforces U.S. leadership in global energy logistics. The shipyard recently received contracts from Hanwha Shipping to construct two LNG carriers, marking the first such order for a U.S. shipyard in nearly 50 years.
Reliable Energy Delivery: Powering Growing Markets
To meet the growing demand for energy, Hanwha is extending its LNG value chain downstream through innovative storage solutions and power-generation projects. Advanced regasification technologies play a crucial role in this effort. Hanwha Ocean, a global leader, specializes in floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), which are floating facilities that store LNG and convert it back into gas at sea. This enables rapid deployment of supply without the need for costly onshore terminals, ensuring reliable energy delivery to growing markets.
Hanwha's comprehensive approach to the LNG value chain, from production to transportation and energy delivery, showcases its commitment to securing a sustainable and reliable energy future.
