Influenza activity remains elevated in Latvia, with six more deaths reported last week, according to the latest influenza surveillance data released by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) on Wednesday.
So far this season, influenza-related fatalities total 28, and the majority of those who died were individuals aged over 80 who had chronic health conditions.
Consistent with trends from prior seasons, the virus is circulating primarily among children up to 14 years old. In the most recent week, influenza activity declined across all age groups except those aged 65 and older, for whom cases did not follow the same downward pattern, the CDC noted.
Separately, the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests increased to 7.5% last week, up from 5.1% the week before. Hospital admissions for COVID-19 rose as well, with 35 patients hospitalized due to coronavirus infection, and seven confirmed COVID-19 deaths reported during the same period, according to the CDC.
