In a bold move that may surprise many, Liverpool is keen to retain the services of Ibrahima Konate this summer, and they are optimistic about securing a new contract for him before the current season wraps up. However, it’s important to note that Konate's performances have drawn criticism from some Liverpool supporters this season, as he has not quite reached the highs of his previous season's form.
To date, he has made a total of 31 appearances in various competitions, bringing his cumulative tally to over 150 matches since joining the club from RB Leipzig in 2021. With his existing contract set to expire this summer, discussions between Liverpool management and Konate, alongside his representatives, are actively underway regarding a potential new agreement.
As I discussed in the most recent episode of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Liverpool has no intention of parting ways with him, even with the recent acquisition of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, who is expected to join the squad for the 2026-27 season. This raises an intriguing question: Can Liverpool really afford to lose Konate when they are working on building depth in their defensive lineup?
Interestingly, Real Madrid withdrew from their pursuit of Konate last year despite persistent speculation linking them to him as his contract neared its end. Jacquet, touted as a possible replacement for Konate, is slated to join Arne Slot’s team but Liverpool’s management appears resolute in not allowing the talented 26-year-old to depart on a free transfer.
In my commentary on the Transfer Insider podcast, I highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Konate’s future, emphasizing that with only a few months remaining on his contract, there is still no clear resolution or agreement in sight. The situation remains fluid.
"Jacquet represents a long-term investment for Liverpool, having spent significantly on him," I noted. "The ideal scenario is for Konate to continue at the club, complemented by Jacquet next season, as they will require a solid quartet of center-backs to navigate the challenges ahead."
Additionally, there are developments concerning Harvey Elliott, who may be facing an exit from Liverpool at a reduced price. Elliott has had a challenging season on loan at Aston Villa, where he has only featured seven times under manager Unai Emery. The club is hesitant to activate the £35 million purchase clause in his contract, which would become applicable after he makes ten appearances.
With ongoing discussions between Liverpool and Aston Villa about Elliott’s future, former CEO Keith Wyness indicated that Villa is interested in negotiating a permanent transfer at a lower cost. If an agreement is not reached, it’s likely Elliott will return to Anfield this summer.
