Get ready to be blown away by this incredible creation! A designer has transformed a pair of Nike sneakers into a fully functional Super Nintendo console, blending fashion and retro gaming in an unprecedented way.
Gustavo Bonzanini, a Singaporean designer, has crafted a unique pair of Nike Air Max 90 sneakers inspired by the iconic Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The sneakers not only pay homage to the '90s aesthetic with their gray and purple color scheme but also house a fully playable SNES console within their structure.
The Super Nintendo, introduced in 1990 in Japan and 1991 in North America, was a groundbreaking console that followed the hugely successful NES. It boasted a 16-bit processor, offering improved graphics, sound, and more intricate games. Launch titles included fan favorites like Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Bonzanini's challenge was to fit the electronics and cartridges of an SNES into a shoe. He ingeniously opted for emulation, utilizing a Raspberry Pi Zero W running the RetroPie emulator, neatly tucked inside the shoe's tongue. To ensure gameplay, he included a battery with a 30-minute capacity.
"The concept emerged from collaborations between sneaker brands and video games. I wondered, wouldn't it be amazing if these sneakers, resembling a video game, could also function as a console?" Bonzanini explained to Engadget.
To enable gameplay on a TV, Bonzanini incorporated video outputs. He added a small analog converter on the shoe's tongue, allowing the Raspberry Pi Zero W's mini-HDMI output to connect to a TV via RCA cables, thus preserving the '90s vibe.
The AIR SNES is compatible with the original SNES gamepad, but Bonzanini enhanced it with an 8BitDo kit for wireless Bluetooth play. However, this masterpiece is a one-of-a-kind creation for the SNES's 35th anniversary, with no plans for mass production.
But here's where it gets controversial... Should this innovative design be limited to a single pair, or could it spark a new trend in gaming footwear? And this is the part most people miss... The potential impact on the gaming industry and fashion world could be immense. What do you think? Should we expect more wearable consoles in the future? Share your thoughts in the comments!
