According to the publication, police officers discovered 0.37 grams of cocaine in a vehicle where Laurie was a passenger. The police issued a criminal infringement notice, but the charge was withdrawn at the request of Laurie's legal representative.
NSW Police confirmed this in a statement to Foxsports.com.au, stating, "Following representations made by the man's legal representative, a criminal infringement notice was issued and the charge withdrawn at Court."
Despite the charges being dropped on November 10, the NRL's Integrity Unit is now investigating the matter. Laurie's solicitor, Pat Duffy, explained that new laws introduced by the NSW government meant Laurie could have faced a $400 fine instead of criminal charges.
"I immediately instructed the police that Mr. Laurie should not have been charged," Duffy stated. "The police agreed to withdraw the charge, and a Criminal Infringement Notice was issued instead."
The alleged incident occurred just one day after Laurie's former team, the Penrith Panthers, lost in the preliminary final to the Brisbane Broncos. A spokesperson for the Panthers confirmed that the club has been in discussions with the NRL regarding the matter.
