Salvation Army's Christmas Miracle: Overcoming Challenges with Generosity (2026)

A remarkable turnaround for the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle drive in 2025

The Salvation Army's Food Bank in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, faced a challenging start to their annual Christmas Kettle Campaign, with a significant drop in early donations. However, a single, substantial donation of $50,000 turned the tide, leading to a record-breaking year for the organization.

Major Sean Furey, director of the Salvation Army Food Bank, shared his amazement with SooToday, stating, 'It looked like it was going to be a horrible year, but one person made a very large donation of $50,000.' The final five days of the campaign witnessed an influx of generosity, with two individuals donating $5,000 each, and many others contributing substantial amounts. The Salvation Army's best day ever was December 22nd, when they collected an impressive $13,000.

The total donations exceeded expectations, surpassing the organization's goal of $132,000 by a substantial margin. With a final figure of $152,000, the Salvation Army Food Bank achieved its best year ever. Furey expressed his gratitude, saying, 'I was just blown away. There were massive donations at the kettles. I think our best day ever was on the 22nd of December.'

The impact of this success extends beyond the Christmas season. The Salvation Army provides essential food hampers to local families, with approximately 2,900 hampers distributed twice a year. Additionally, they offer meals at the door, available to clients during specific hours, Monday through Thursday. In 2025, the organization also distributed over 25,000 lunch bags, each containing five meals.

The Salvation Army's commitment to serving the community is further exemplified by their monthly food provision for around 200 seniors. Major Furey highlighted the significance of this program, stating, 'One big thing for us is that our seniors program is now safe. We're serving 200 seniors a month and now we’re fully funded for the year.'

The community's generosity played a pivotal role in this remarkable turnaround. As word of the initial donation shortfall spread, donations surged, enabling the Salvation Army to meet and exceed their goals. Furey attributed this success to the 'generous nature of Saultites' and expressed his gratitude, saying, 'The Lord came through.'

The Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle Campaign not only addresses immediate food needs but also ensures the continuity of essential programs, thanks to the community's support.
