A Historic Moment for Uganda's Rotary Journey: Unveiling the Charter President of Medical Stars
A New Era of Service and Impact
In a vibrant ceremony held at the Speke Ballroom, Munyonyo, Uganda, Sheilla Nduhukire was officially inaugurated as the Charter President of the Rotary Club of Medical Stars (RC Medical Stars). This event signifies a remarkable milestone, as RC Medical Stars, under the National Medical Stores (NMS), becomes the first-ever corporate Rotary Club in District 9214, encompassing Uganda and Tanzania.
Leadership and Vision in the Spotlight
The Chief Guest, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, represented by Rotary International Director Elect (RIDE) Emmanuel Katongole, praised the NMS Board and Management for their pioneering spirit. He emphasized how public institutions are not just service providers but also sources of community leadership and inspiration.
"Our nation looks to public bodies for guidance and transformative initiatives. NMS's establishment of this Rotary Club showcases how public service can be a powerful force for positive change, focusing on people's needs and driving real impact," Rt. Hon. Tayebwa stated.
He further urged the club to expand its reach, encouraging them to venture beyond Kajjansi and support communities in dire need. "Let this club set an example of impactful corporate Rotary, inspiring other public and private entities to follow suit and make a difference," he added.
Partnerships and Collaboration: The Key to Success
District Governor Christine Kyeyune Kawooya, who chartered the first club since taking office in July, commended Medical Stars for their collaborative spirit. She highlighted the recently concluded Mega Medical Camp, organized by RC Medical Stars in partnership with 20 Rotary & Rotaract Clubs and 10 Corporate Sponsors, as a testament to the power of teamwork.
"When we join forces, we amplify our resources and capabilities, enabling us to provide more comprehensive support to our communities," Kawooya emphasized.
ESG Values and Long-Term Sustainability
The Board of National Medical Stores has placed a strong emphasis on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values as fundamental to their long-term sustainability. The formation of RC Medical Stars directly aligns with this strategic vision.
Dr. Jotham Musinguzi, Board Chairman of NMS, explained, "Through this club, we aim to deepen community trust, enhance employee engagement, and foster leadership development. Our staff has already discovered new talents in volunteerism, project management, and public speaking. We want to demonstrate that government institutions can be innovative, value-driven, and people-centric."
A Commitment to Making a Difference
During the ceremony, RIDE Emmanuel Katongole pledged his support by forming a 5-man committee to raise UGX 150 million for the construction of a four-classroom block at Akengyeya Primary School in Kazo District. Currently, pupils study under trees, and this initiative aims to provide them with a proper learning environment. The fundraising drive will be led by Dr. Fabian Kasi, Managing Director of Centenary Bank.
A Club Dedicated to Public Service
RC Medical Stars primarily comprises NMS staff, with 50 members inducted into Rotary during the event. Moses Kamabare, General Manager of NMS, was among the inductees and was also recognized as a Major Donor for his generous contributions to the Rotary Foundation, which funds humanitarian projects worldwide.
Early Achievements and Ongoing Projects
In her inaugural address, President Sheilla Nduhukire highlighted the club's impressive early accomplishments. She spoke about the successful mega medical camp in Kajjansi, which benefited 2,100 individuals and was supported by 20 Rotary and Rotaract clubs and 10 corporate sponsors. She also announced an ongoing partnership with RC Entebbe Base to assist children with disabilities at Noah's Ark School in Garuga, providing wheelchairs and mobility support equipment.
RC Medical Stars' impactful storytelling earned them the Best New Club Public Image Award in their first 100 days.
Strengthening Leadership and Networks
To bolster its leadership and expand its network, RC Medical Stars inducted several distinguished Honorary Members. These individuals bring a wealth of expertise and connections to the club, including Dr. Fabian Kasi, Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, Past District Governors Peace Taremwa and Ken Mugisha, Charter President Jimmy D. Mugerwa, and Board Chairman of Uganda Breweries Limited. District Membership Chair Annie Ninyesiga and Past Assistant Governor Micheal Ayebazibwe, who serves as the Club's Advisor, were also part of this prestigious induction.
The Birth of a Corporate Rotary Club: A Vision Realized
The idea to establish a Rotary Club within NMS was inspired by RIDE Emmanuel Katongole in April 2025. He challenged Moses Kamabare to initiate a corporate-based club that would champion service beyond the workplace. With the NMS Board's approval, RC Medical Stars was officially formed in May 2025 and chartered four months later, setting a precedent as the first corporate Rotary Club in District 9214.
Looking to the Future
Sheilla Nduhukire will serve as Charter President for one year, marking the beginning of a new era. This era recognizes corporate institutions not only for their operational excellence but also for their dedication to social impact and community transformation. As the club moves forward, it aims to continue making a positive difference, inspired by its founding principles and the commitment of its members.
