The Axolotl's Rise to Fame: A Banknote's Impact on Mexico's Cultural Icon
The axolotl, a unique amphibian with its eternal tadpole state, has become an unexpected star in Mexico's currency. This fascinating creature, once a common sight in Lake Texcoco, now faces an uncertain future. But its journey to becoming a symbol of Mexico's heritage began with a single axolotl named Gorda.
Gorda, who lived in a museum in Mexico City, found herself on the 50-peso banknote in 2021. This depiction of her as Mexico's iconic salamander species caught the attention of the International Bank Notes Society, earning the note the prestigious title of 'Note of the Year'.
Four years later, the Bank of Mexico revealed a surprising trend. Out of 12.9 million Mexicans holding onto this note, many are hoarding more than one. Interestingly, only a minority expressed reluctance to spend the notes, indicating a significant portion is temporarily out of circulation. Some collectors are even trading these notes for up to 100 times their face value.
The axolotl's popularity on the banknote is attributed to its unique design and cultural significance. Axolotls hold a special place in Mexico's history, predating the Aztecs and Spanish. They were once abundant in Lake Texcoco, but the lake's drainage after the Spanish conquest led to their decline.
Today, axolotls are critically endangered, with their population in Xochimilco collapsing to just 36 per square kilometre by 2014. Gorda, one of the few specimens, now resides in Axolotitlán, a museum dedicated to preserving this iconic species. Despite her age, Gorda's appearance on the banknote has sparked interest in her species, bringing attention to the urgent need for conservation efforts.
As Pamela Valencia, the museum's founder, notes, the axolotl's inclusion in everyday currency is a powerful way to educate the public about its existence and the importance of saving it. This unique banknote not only showcases Mexico's rich history but also highlights the delicate balance between cultural preservation and the survival of a beloved species.
