The Maggie Toad Busters, led by Peter Illidge, are on a mission to eradicate cane toads from the island. With a $16,394 grant from the Queensland government, they aim to significantly reduce the toad population over the next three years. Paul Gilligan, a toad handler, describes the competition as a one-of-a-kind event, attracting large crowds.
The Cane Toad's Journey
Cane toads were introduced to North Queensland in the 1930s to control sugar cane beetles, but they quickly became a widespread pest. Professor Ross Alford from James Cook University notes that the islands in the region, including Magnetic Island, are no exception to their march across northern Australia. Toads often hitchhike on vehicles and cargo, making their way to new territories.
The Eradication Effort
The Maggie Toad Busters are employing humane methods to euthanize the toads. Bruce Hobby, a member of the group, has laid 30 traps in local creeks, collecting and euthanizing approximately 80 kilograms of tadpoles and 480 adult toads. He emphasizes the impact of the toads on Australia's unique wildlife, which is sad and concerning.
Community Action
The group aims to work with the Townsville City Council to install bins in the island's parks, allowing the public to contribute to the toad eradication effort. Despite the challenge of dealing with over 200 million toads across the country, localized community efforts can make a difference, according to Professor Alford. Reducing their numbers can minimize their impact on other animals.
