Toyota's Hilux lineup may soon expand with a new wide-track variant, according to hints from Toyota Australia's design chief. The Hilux GR Sport, a potential future flagship trim, is also in the works, though likely further down the road. The latest generation of the Hilux is a thorough rework rather than a clean-slate design, meaning the center section, including doors and the greenhouse, is carried over from the outgoing model. To offer a glimpse of what could be coming, digital artist Theophilus Chin put together a set of fresh GR Sport renderings. Theottle's illustrations blend the new Hilux's front and rear lighting elements, grille, bumper intakes, and fenders into the GR Sport silhouette, with subtle revisions to the cladding and underbody protection. The wider stance and chunkier wheels complete the look, and the result lands close to what you’d expect from an official factory version. The outgoing Hilux received various GR Sport trims depending on the region, with the latest and most capable introduced in 2023, featuring redesigned bumpers, wide fender extensions, a lifted and upgraded suspension, and a slightly more powerful 2.8-liter turbodiesel with 221 hp. However, currently, Toyota offers the new Hilux with only one track width across the board, a departure from the previous range. During the model's local debut, Australian media raised the question, and Toyota Australia's chief designer, Nick Hogios, hinted at a potential wide-body version, saying, 'That’s, I guess, in the future. But yeah, we’ll get to that – at the moment, there’s enough news here with this one.' Toyota has already begun hinting at performance-inspired accessories, with modified examples displayed during the new Hilux launch in Thailand, including a build sporting GR Parts. This suggests Gazoo Racing hasn’t been idle and has likely begun laying the groundwork for the more rugged trim, even if it’s not quite ready to take the spotlight.
