The Sci-Fi Twist in 'Sugar': A Deep Dive into the Show's Evolution
The Apple TV series 'Sugar' has captivated audiences with its unique blend of neo-noir detective storytelling and an extraterrestrial twist. Showrunner Sam Catlin discusses the show's evolution, the impact of the mid-season reveal, and his approach to crafting a compelling narrative.
When 'Sugar' first hit the screens in 2024, viewers were introduced to the enigmatic John Sugar, a private detective with an uncanny ability to empathize, communicate with animals, and speak multiple languages. Little did they know, this was just the tip of the iceberg. The mid-season reveal that Sugar is an alien from another planet shocked audiences and set the stage for an intriguing second season.
Catlin, who took the reins as showrunner for season two, was mindful of not trying to top the alien reveal. Instead, he aimed for a more subtle approach, building tension through suspense rather than surprise.
"Suspense is usually better than surprise," Catlin told the Hollywood Reporter. "Give the information to the audience, and then let it percolate. After a short while, those types of surprises and turns kind of suck. You can very often feel that the narrative is constructed to make them land, and it’s very often at the expense of the organic evolution of the character, which is really what should always be the priority."
This approach allowed Catlin to maintain the show's focus on the detective genre, a genre he deeply connected with. "To me, what resonated most in season one—other than the tone of the music and Colin’s performance—was the nostalgic noir detective show set in Los Angeles," he explained. "My introduction to the detective genre was through the ’70s noir shows set in Los Angeles. How I first saw Los Angeles on TV was probably through those detective shows."
In season two, Sugar remains a private investigator dedicated to helping those in need. His obsession with missing-persons cases is intertwined with his own family history, adding depth to his character. Catlin emphasizes the importance of maintaining this core identity, "It’s very important that he cling to that and help other people find the missing."
As the show progresses, the audience is treated to a slow-burning tension, with the alien aspect simmering in the background. Catlin's strategy is to let the audience absorb the information gradually, allowing the narrative to evolve organically.
"What many people don’t realize is that the sci-fi elements are just a part of the show's unique blend," Catlin added. "The real story is about a detective's journey, and the alien twist adds a layer of complexity and intrigue."
With each new episode, 'Sugar' continues to explore the human condition through the lens of an extraterrestrial protagonist, leaving viewers eager to uncover more secrets and witness the emotional journey of John Sugar.
